There are places in Puerto Rico that even frequent visitors have never heard of.
This is one of them.
Tucked away just outside the main tourist areas is the Pterocarpus Forest, a rare and protected swamp forest unlike anything else on the island.
In fact, it’s the only forest of its kind in Puerto Rico — and one of the few places where you can walk through a tropical wetland on an elevated boardwalk, surrounded by nature in every direction.

A Different Kind of Rainforest
Most people visit the island’s more famous rainforest — but this is something completely different.
Think of it as the rainforest… turned up a notch.
A wooden boardwalk stretches for about three-quarters of a mile, guiding you through the forest above the swamp below. As you walk, you’re surrounded by towering trees and dense vegetation all around you.
It’s peaceful. No mosquitoes biting at your ankles.
It’s beautiful.
And it’s something very few visitors ever experience.
This isn’t a crowded attraction.
It’s a place where you can slow down, take it all in, and really feel what makes Puerto Rico so unique.
Wildlife & Natural Beauty
The forest is home to a variety of local wildlife, including:
Tropical birds
Reptiles and small animals
Unique plant life found in wetland ecosystems
Because this area isn’t heavily visited, it still feels undisturbed and natural, giving you a more authentic connection to the environment.
A Sweet Finish to the Day
After exploring the forest, we continue on to one of my favorite stops on the island — a waterfront spot known for its fresh mango daiquiris.
It’s the perfect way to relax after time in the forest: a cool drink, a beautiful setting, and a chance to take in everything you’ve experienced during the day.
