Travel Tips for Visiting Puerto Rico

A Few Things That Will Make Your Trip Even Better

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of showing thousands of visitors around Puerto Rico. One thing I’ve learned is that a little local knowledge can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your trip.

Puerto Rico is a welcoming and friendly place, and most visitors have an amazing experience here. These simple tips can help you enjoy the island even more and connect with the people and culture that make Puerto Rico so special.

Learn a Few Words of Spanish

One of the best things you can do when visiting Puerto Rico is learn a few basic Spanish phrases.

Most people here do speak English, especially in tourist areas, but Spanish is the primary language of the island. Making the effort to say a few simple words like hola (hello), por favor (please), or gracias (thank you) goes a long way.

Locals truly appreciate the effort, and you’ll often find that people become even more friendly and welcoming when visitors try to speak a little Spanish.

You don’t have to be fluent — just showing respect for the language and culture makes a big difference.

Island Time is Real

Life in Puerto Rico moves at a slightly different pace than in many places in the mainland U.S. Locals sometimes refer to this as “island time.”

Things tend to be a little more relaxed here. Restaurants may take a little longer, traffic may move a little slower, and people tend to focus more on enjoying the moment.

Most visitors quickly realize that this slower pace is actually part of what makes Puerto Rico such a great place to visit.

Cash is Still Helpful

While credit cards are widely accepted in Puerto Rico, cash is still useful in many places, especially at smaller local restaurants, food stands, or roadside vendors.

Some of the best food on the island comes from small local spots, so it’s always a good idea to carry a little cash with you.

Respect Nature

Puerto Rico is home to incredible natural landscapes, including the famous El Yunque National Forest, beautiful beaches, and mountain rainforests.

When visiting natural areas, it’s important to help keep them clean and protected. Avoid leaving trash behind, stay on marked trails when hiking, and respect wildlife and plants.

These places are part of what makes Puerto Rico so special.

Try Local Food

Puerto Rico has an amazing food culture, and trying local dishes is one of the highlights of visiting the island.

If you have the chance, try dishes like roasted pork in Guavate, fresh seafood along the coast, or classic Puerto Rican favorites like mofongo and tostones.

You’ll discover flavors you won’t find anywhere else.

Weather Can Change Quickly

Puerto Rico has a tropical climate, which means sunshine can quickly turn into a short rain shower — especially in the mountains or rainforest areas.

The good news is that rain showers here usually pass quickly, and the sun often comes back out soon after.

It’s always a good idea to bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket when exploring the island.

Enjoy the Experience

Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with incredible landscapes, great food, and friendly people.

If you take a little time to explore beyond the main tourist areas, you’ll discover why so many people fall in love with this island.

I’ve been fortunate to call Puerto Rico home since 2012, and I always enjoy sharing the places that make it special.
